The UN Women have launched the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day “Gender Equality for a Sustainable Tomorrow.”  UN Women has said in a statement “the year 2022 is pivotal for achieving gender equality” in the context of climate change and environmental and disaster risk reduction. Without gender equality, today, a sustainable future, and an equal future remains beyond our reach.”  Read more

We asked our team who are the women they felt had made a significant impact to further women being treated on an equal footing, this is what they had to say:

Marie Curie – for her contribution to change the world in a time where being a female meant she had to fight harder to reach her goals. Her achievements are changing how we treat cancer through the development of radioactivity.  The first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win a Nobel Prize twice.  Quotes “Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.” “Have no fear of perfection; you’ll never reach it.”  Read more 

Kathleen “Kay” McNulty Mauchly Antonelli was an Irish computer programmer and one of the six original programmers of the ENIAC – Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, one of the first general-purpose electronic digital computers. In 1997, the six ENIAC women were inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame, and in 1999, a computer science prize in Kay’s honour was established at Letterkenny IT.  Read more 

Professor Laura Viani, a neurotological surgeon, a fellow of RCSI and a member of the RCSI Council, opened Ireland’s first cochlear implant clinic in Dublin in 1994 and completed the country’s first cochlear implant surgery in March 1995. She remained Ireland’s only cochlear implant surgeon until 2009. 27 years ago. The National Hearing Implant and Research Centre (NHIRC), a state-of-the-art facility officially opened at Beaumont Hospital in April 2019. With Prof. Laura Viani leading the way, the centre carries out ground-breaking research into cochlear implantation and neurological disorders of the ear helping thousands of Irish deaf babies, children and adults hear. Prof Viani was awarded the Cpl World-Class Talent Series in 2019, an award established to recognise outstanding individuals who have transformed lives and societies with their life-changing work. “Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people” Helen Keller (another inspirational woman!).  Read more

Constance Markievicz became the first-ever female MP elected to the House of Commons in 1918.  Constance became a senior minister in the Dáil after Ireland became independent in 1922 but died a pauper’s death five years later after giving up the last of her wealth to be among the poor where she wanted to be.  My Grandmother used to enthral us with the tales of her childhood where Countess Markievicz was a feature in her home on a regular basis, bringing alive the patriotic element of Irish history we should all be so proud of.  “To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to lose everything else.” Read more
