Standard: noun

“A level of quality or attainment”
“Something used as a measure, norm or model in comparative evaluations”.

What is ISO standard

We all have our own definition of the word standard. But what exactly is an ISO standard, and what relevance does it have to the optimisation of your business model?

An ISO standard is an agreed and documented process that can be replicated across the business landscape. Or, to paraphrase the International Standards Organisation, it is an approved document, designed by a cohort of experts, the key objective of which is to provide research-based guidance on continuous performance improvement of design, production, services, and personnel. In short, an ISO standard is a streamlined way of operating that involves working to a series of stringent custom requirements.

Since its inception in 1947, the ISO has published no less than 24,600 standards. With its Quality Management System Standard ISO 9001 currently exceeding 1 million certifications, it is by far the organisation’s most popular and impactful standard. To recognise the hugely positive contribution ISO Standards have made to global business, 14th October has been declared World Standards Day.  Each year, the ISO along with other bodies such as the NSAI, celebrates a different standards-related theme, which for WSD 2022 is “Sustainable Development Goals”.

Sustainable: adjective

“Ability to be maintained at a specific rate or level”

Like the term Standard, we all have an idea of what being sustainable means. But what does it mean in the context of the World Standards Day theme, Sustainable Development Goals?

Sustainable Development Goals is a chain of global goals designed as a plan to build a peaceful and prosperous planet for all. An Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework, it is focused on social justice, climate action and the circular economy.

How do we achieve SDG's

To achieve these goals, business, social and political leaders worldwide will need to unite, a move which will require singularity of method, mind, and purpose. By utilising best practice sustainable solutions such as ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 business leaders, including Irish business leaders like us, can join the drive to “build back better”.

Validated the world over and renowned for driving innovation through change, ISO Standards are the bedrock of improvement, singularity of purpose and sustainability. They offer us multiple benefits from reduced waste to improved performance, from lower carbon footprint to optimal energy management.

An effective response to the rising economic, environmental, and social challenges is one that is robust, forward-facing and united.

A framework for the future, ISO Standards offer expert-based solutions to our real-time problems. Their ability to produce significant results through the introduction of streamlined operations makes them a “no brainer” when it comes to project managing Sustainable Development Goals.

ISO Management Systems

Implementing ISO-based management systems such as ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 will ensure your business can achieve optimal energy, environmental, waste and water management.

All of these strands ultimately pull together resulting in a fairer and more equitable world in which we all benefit from a healthy economy, environment, and existence.

As an environmentally and socially conscious business, becoming 100% sustainable is at the forefront of the CG Business Consulting mission. With that in mind, we want to work with you and all our clients to drive environmental and social awareness, achieve net zero and unite with our other business and social partners across the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability: A united front

By putting on this united front, Irish businesses can become leaders in the push towards global sustainability.

Sustainability is the lynchpin of our future. Anyone who has watched the most recent series of Frozen Planet will know only too well the damage we have done to our planet and by default, to ourselves.

The future wellbeing of nature, wildlife and humanity is in our hands.

By working together with the shared goal of Sustainability, we can help to rebuild our world, making it a cleaner, greener, and safer place for all people and living things.

CG Business Consulting clients will be aware that for some time now Sustainability has been a vital part of our business model.

Side by side with Quality, Sustainability has become the fulcrum of our extensive suite of ISO services, which is why we feel it is so important for us to unite behind the ISO and echo its call to action for Irish business leaders to join together to make the world “a better, fairer and more sustainable” place.
