What is an ISO Integrated Management System or IMS?
An Integrated Management System or IMS for short, is arrived at by having two or more standards-based management systems in operation at an organisation. In effect, it is a single process-based system designed to manage multiple strands of the business operations in accordance with the requirements of two or more ISO standards.
Many of the ISO’s most popular standards were designed with compatibility and ease of interoperability in mind. For example, the ISO 14001 Environmental MS and ISO 50001 Energy MS standards were designed to be compatible, not just with each other, but also with the ISO 9001 Quality MS. Indeed ISO 13485 also takes many of its process fundamentals from ISO 9001.
Interoperable functionality has always been a benchmark for ISO Standards, ensuring organisations will benefit through IMS implementation by being able to build a multi-faceted, synchronised value-based framework.
This crossover of requirements and approach to standardisation pave the way for seamless integration into existing systems, allowing organisations to interlink processes to achieve optimal business management and return on investment.
