Why Smart Companies Are Linking ISO Certification to Their EcoVadis Score

Written by Aine Murphy | Jul 23, 2026 3:32:57 PM

If your business is chasing a stronger EcoVadis rating, whether driven by a customer requirement, a tender condition, or a genuine sustainability commitment, there's a pattern worth knowing.

Companies that hold ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety), and ISO 50001 (Energy Management) consistently outperform their peers on EcoVadis assessments. Add ISO 27001 (Information Security), a verified carbon footprint, a credible net zero pathway, and third-party GHG verification, and the correlation becomes even stronger.

This isn't a coincidence. It's by design.

How EcoVadis Works and Why ISO Matters?

EcoVadis assesses companies across four themes: Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement, each weighted according to your industry and company size. For most manufacturing and industrial businesses, Environment carries the heaviest weighting. Within each theme, EcoVadis explicitly rewards:

  • Documented policies on environmental, energy, and information security management
  • Implemented action programmes, not just intentions
  • Measurable results, such as emissions data, energy consumption, and reduction targets
  • External verification of your claims

ISO management systems are structured around exactly this logic: policy, planning, implementation, measurement, review, improvement. An organisation with ISO 14001 has already documented its environmental impacts, set objectives, and can demonstrate progress - which maps directly onto what EcoVadis is looking for. ISO 50001 strengthens the energy dimension with structured reviews, baselines, and improvement targets, while ISO 45001 addresses the Labour & Human Rights theme with the same rigour.

ISO 27001 does the same job for the Ethics theme. Its Clause 5 governance requirements and Annex A controls on data protection, anti-corruption, and third-party risk give assessors the documented oversight they're scoring for - and that consistently shows up in stronger Ethics scores. The result: ISO-certified companies arrive at their EcoVadis assessment with the evidence already built.

The Carbon Layer: Where the Gap Widens

Certification alone takes you a long way, far enough to reach Bronze, the top 35% of all rated companies globally. But the companies pushing into Silver, Gold, and Platinum increasingly have something more: a quantified carbon footprint, a net zero pathway aligned to a recognised framework such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and GHG emissions verified by an accredited third party.

Here's the reality check: only 26% of EcoVadis-rated companies maintain a GHG inventory, and just 2% have committed to SBTi-aligned targets. That gap is your opportunity. EcoVadis scores are relative, not absolute - you're compared against others in your industry. As more companies raise their game, standing still means falling back.

What This Means for Your Business

There are two types of companies reading this right now. The first already holds one or more ISO certifications and has some sustainability reporting in place, but hasn't yet connected the dots to EcoVadis. They're leaving rating points on the table, and may not know it. The second is being pushed by their supply chain to hit a minimum EcoVadis score and isn't sure where to start. For them, the path is clearer than it looks: build the management system foundations, quantify your carbon position, get verified, and your EcoVadis score follows.

How CG Business Consulting Can Help

At CG Business Consulting (CGBC), we help organisations across Ireland and beyond implement ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, and ISO 27001 management systems - designed not just for certification, but for real operational value and measurable sustainability and governance outcomes. We help clients:

  • Quantify their carbon footprint across Scope 1, 2, and 3
  • Develop a credible, science-aligned net zero pathway
  • Achieve third-party GHG verification from accredited bodies
  • Strengthen governance and data protection through ISO 27001 to boost the Ethics component of their score
  • Align all of the above with their EcoVadis improvement strategy

We're not just certification consultants. We're sustainability performance partners, and the link between ISO, carbon, and EcoVadis is exactly the territory we work in every day.

ISO 27001 is not a silver bullet - NIS2 has sector-specific and regulatory requirements that go beyond the standard. But for most organisations, it provides the framework and the evidence of governance that regulators will want to see.
