M50 COMMISSION LTD – Case Study
M50 Commission Limited are contracted by the National Road Authority (NRA) to operate and maintain the M50 Motorway from the M1 to the M11 for the next 35 years.
Their responsibility includes 24-hour emergency response and patrols on the network, as well as routine maintenance operations including vehicle recovery and winter maintenance, as well as day-to-day operational requirements such as grass cutting.
From the initial upgrading of the M50 from two lanes to four lanes (including an auxiliary
lane), M50 Commission Ltd is also responsible for the future maintenance and capital replacements this vast project will require in the coming years.
Naturally such a complex infrastructural project requires an intelligent and efficient quality management system that not only benefits the company and its customers, but also benefits the environment.
Why ISO Accreditation was an important objective
The need to develop separate ISO 9001 certification in quality management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management and ISO 18001 Health and Safety Management certification has always been a contractual requirement of M50 Commission Limited, although implementing and maintaining that obligation required immense focus partnered with expertise and experience.
Operations and Maintenance Manager, Fraser Boyd, explains: ‘The NRA have to certify all our quality management systems, and while certain iso certification was already in place, we were keen to bring in CGBC’s expertise as environmental consultants to report for us on a monthly basis to ensure we could maintain the highest standards, as well as respond to any issues that an audit might uncover.’
The benefits of partnering with CGBC
M50 Commission Limited quickly saw the benefits of CGBC’s experience in not just being able to react appropriately to address specific issues of concern, but to focus their entire management team on long-term objectives. ‘iso certification focuses the mind,’ Fraser explains, ‘You work towards it, with clear guidelines and goals. You’re doing things correctly, as they should be done, benefiting the company, benefiting our customers, benefiting the environment. And we’re constantly putting our best foot forward, going forward.’
‘Caroline’sin-depth knowledge of the ISO quality management systems allowed her to work quickly through our existing systems and develop a strategy to improve and refine it. This helped refocus our own team, with Caroline leading seminars to inform and educate the importance of the Quality Management System and how everyone has a responsibility and a role to play.’
Within less than six months of engaging CGBC, revisions to existing systems, processes and procedures had been implemented, and every compliance review had been met – and continues to be met.
‘Caroline and her team have been a pleasure to work with, and I have found that her approach has always been very professional and above all enthusiastic,’ says Fraser, ‘Caroline takes control of the process, but regularly asks for feedback to ensure that we are all on the same page and working in the same direction. She is a great multitasker, and was clear in setting goals and deliverables. During the NSAI surveillance audits her presence was invaluable, and her understanding of the process and what the auditor is looking for with respect to the ISO standards is truly remarkable.’
By partnering with CGBC, M50 Commission Limited continue to demonstrate an understanding of their environmental responsibilities that employees, contractors, customers and shareholders recognise and admire – reporting publicly on environmental objectives and performances with confidence and accuracy.
